Excavation works in cities like London, can sometimes prove to be a journey into the past, as below the streets, buildings and parks of London lies thousands of years of history. On many occasions over the years, Randall Plant has worked closely with archaeological teams from MOLA carefully assisting with excavations, coordinating and planning the main works around the need to uncover, salvage, record and document these fascinating elements of our cities past.

Archaeology is not always about ancient structures and artefacts, sometimes the more delicate and emotive issue of human remains will be encountered. We have worked on many large scale projects where remains from Victorian to Roman times have been uncovered.

With all these sites, the works are very carefully planned with human remains being reburied in consecrated ground in a professional and dignified manner. To achieve this, Randall Plant Ltd work with a leading funeral directors and archaeologists to offer a discreet service for this purpose. Using specialist screening equipment and operatives trained and experienced in this type of work, we can recover intact coffins down to the smallest fragments of bone from burial sites. All sites are hoarded and screened from public view and strict health and safety provisions adhered to.

Enabling works, encompasses every aspect of works required for site preparation to clear the way and enable the main construction contract to proceed unencumbered and focused on the end goal. Enabling works therefore cannot be defined as one discipline but, links across to combine many of our other specialist service areas of construction and demolition. A good Enabling Works Contractor must be versatile, adaptable and have a good working knowledge of a variety of specialist industry disciplines. The face of demolition has changed dramatically over the years with the old wrecking ball, crane and labour intensive ways gone and replaced with ever improving mechanical means of demolition. Shears, munchers, long reach excavators, robotic breakers are just some of the tools being used now to make demolition safer and more environmentally friendly and wherever possible, distancing the operative from the work face and making the management of noise, dust and vibration far easier than before. Recycling is now a major driving force when pricing and planning any demolition project with targets of 100% recycled being achieved and landfill being used as the last resort.

Although the Randall name has been associated with demolition for many years, we are not afraid of change, in fact we actively embrace it and are always looking for safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly ways of achieving our goals.

Deconstruction

Deconstruction is the disassembly rather than demolition of building components, generally carried out in the reverse order of how they were constructed. The reasons for  deconstruction are generally for safety and environmental reasons or a combination of both but, there are also times when building components are to be reused, for example in properties with architectural or historical interest.

Conventional demolition methods are often not appropriate for projects where adjacent structures or proximity to the public would make it unsafe and environmentally damaging therefore, carefully planned and coordinated deconstruction is required.

Deconstruction can be applied to total building removal and also intricate remodelling but, whatever the requirement, Randall Contracting Ltd have the proven experience, combined with access to teams of qualified specialists and engineers to carefully plan and execute the most challenging of projects.

Temporary works specialists

Temporary works is often an integral part of many construction and demolition projects with propping, scaffolding, façade retention, earthwork support, even hoardings being forms of temporary works. They are essential elements of the project put in place to facilitate the construction of the permanent works.

Although temporary in nature, they require as much thought, coordination and design as the permanent works, if not, more so. They have to remain in place doing the job intended whilst the permanent works are being installed, therefore, design, planning, placement and coordination is the key.

Randall Contracting Ltd have access to specialist equipment and designers required for such works, together with in house teams of temporary works, coordinators and supervisors all with years of experience working in the most technically demanding environments.

Façade retention is a fascinating and challenging specialist area of temporary works. Often for planning, historical and conservation reasons, elements of a structure under redevelopment have to be retained and in certain cases, this will be the entire façade of the building. To remove part or all of a buildings structure yet maintain its façade, fully stable and intact, requires experience, technical expertise, confidence and teamwork, all of these are key attributes that are fundamental elements of the knowledge base and work ethic at Randall Contracting Ltd.
