Thorpe Coombe Hospital

With a major redevelopment of the Thorpe Coombe Hospital site planned, Randall Contracting were engaged by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust, as Principal Contractor for the Enabling works phase of the development.

The site for the proposed new Health Centre, to be built in 2018, was currently being used for patient and staff parking. The Enabling works scope was to demolish the old Rodway Bryson Ward building to create space for the construction of a new, but temporary, car park to release the old parking area for development.

However, prior to us being able to demolish the Rodway Bryson building, we had to undertake a programme of extensive service diversions around the whole hospital site, as many of the services were routed through the old building. This was carried out in a live working hospital environment, requiring careful planning and phasing to ensure that at no time was any part of the Hospital without crucial services, including gas, electricity, communications and IT.

With the old building clear and services diverted, the new car park and access road could be constructed. The car park design utilised permeable tarmac construction with a pervious sub base material, with the whole construction effectively tanked with an impermeable geomembrane. Car park lighting was also provided with security barrier control at the access road.
